Bisecting an Angle

Steve’s friends Bob and Allen arrived a little bit late to his birthday party. Unfortunately, only one piece of cake was left. Steve wants to make sure that both of his friends receive an equal size piece of cake.

Steve needs to know how to cut the cake in exactly two equal halves, as shown above. But, how will he do it? Bisecting an angle is one method that can help him to divide the cake equally.

Lesson Objectives

After completing this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Understand what an angle is
  • Draw an angle of given measure
  • Bisect an angle

Before learning how to bisect an angle, Steve must learn a few things about angles.

We can see many real-life objects around us in which angles are hidden. For example, look at the images of the clock below.

The two hands of the clock make an angle. Similarly, observe the pictures below that have angles hidden in them.

Example 1

The edges of the fan make an angle.

Example 2

The blades of a pair of scissors form an angle.

Example 3

When we hold an object before our eyes, bending our forearm at the elbow, an angle is formed.
